Expanded health and wellness offerings

Big things are happening at New Kensington Community Development Corporation. We are expanding our health and wellness offerings with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) programming. Kensington-based food assistance programs, retail stores, and community groups will partner to bring nutrition education to our neighbors.⠀

SNAP-Ed teaches people how to make their food money stretch, how to shop for and cook healthy meals, and how to stay physically active. SNAP-Ed initiatives include nutrition education classes, social marketing campaigns, and efforts to improve policies, systems, and the environment of communities.

Made possible by our donors

At NKCDC, the SNAP-Ed program will build on Nourish, a nutrition education and meal kit delivery program first developed by Sunday Suppers Philly which found a new home at NKCDC this year. ⠀

“Donor support of Sunday Suppers and its commitment to this community has helped NKCDC become one of the few community development corporations in the country providing SNAP-Ed programming,” Dr. Bill McKinney, Executive Director of NKCDC said. “This is a perfect example of how dollars from individual donors can leverage major support.”

Hiring for new positions

As NKCDC’s nutrition education programs develop, we are hiring for three health and wellness positions. The Nutrition Educator is the primary facilitator for all SNAP-Ed nutrition programming. The SNAP-Ed Community Health Worker connects community residents to social and health resources. The Research, Data and Operations Assistant helps NKCDC track and analyze data for outreach activities including SNAP-Ed programming, community-based learning, Healthy Corner Stores, and various educational activities. If you know someone who cares about health and wellness and would enjoy working for an active nonprofit, please encourage them to apply!

Seeking people who want to eat well

Finally, we are inviting residents of the Kensington, Fairhill, and Juniata neighborhoods of Philadelphia to join Nourish. Are you, or is someone you know, interested in cooking new recipes and learning about nutrition? Text NKCDCnourish to 833-901-2072 and fill out the survey!
