Blog Community We CAN launches youth conversations about safety & police

Beginning this month, the We CAN Collaborative will be convening two-hour workshops for Kensington and Fairhill youth to talk about about safety and the role police play in their community.

The conversations, facilitated by Creative Praxis, are designed to hear from youth and young adults, ages 14-24, and develop recommendations with them to improve safety in the Kensington and Fairhill communities.

We CAN is an interagency partnership funded by the U.S. Department of Justice. For the past two years, three local nonprofits—NKCDC, Impact Services, and HACE—have been working with community partners and the 24th District Philadelphia Police to build trust, eliminate crime, and advocate for the Kensington and Fairhill communities.⠀

Workshops will take place on Zoom, and will include individual workshop options as well as an extended series of four two-hour sessions. Target gift cards are offered as an incentive for attendance. Young people can sign up at bit.ly/youthsafetyconversation in English or Spanish.

All participants will be invited to join planning sessions in May and a culminating event in June with key city officials to share information.

All youth conversations will be recorded for data collection, but no identifying information will be collected or shared. All attendees will be required to sign a waiver before participating, and participants under 18 will also need to get a permission form signed by a parent or guardian.

If you have questions or want assistance signing up for a conversation, please contact Cass Green at wecan@nkcdc.org or 267-896-0068.
