Blog Community NKCDC hosts alternative Spring Cleanup Day

The City of Philadelphia’s 13th annual Philly Spring Cleanup is postponed, but NKCDC has decided that spring cleaning can’t wait. Until May 10, we‘re hosting a Safe Spring Cleanup to challenge Philadelphia neighbors and businesses to pick up, sweep up, pretty up, and plant stuff anywhere in Philadelphia.

“Physical distancing rules apply,” said Jessica Hoffman, who is coordinating the cleanup. “We’re asking people to clean alone or with their housemates, to stay six feet from everyone else, and to wear a mask,” she said.

Besides the satisfaction of making Philly better, NKCDC will raffle off $10, $20, $50 and $100 gift cards to participants. Anyone can enter the raffle by posting before and after photos to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #safespringcleanup, and tagging @NKCDC. Those who don’t use social media can go to bit.ly/safe-spring-cleanup to upload their before and after pictures.

Stuffing the raffle box is allowed: people who post on Facebook, Instagram and the web form will get three chances to win. The block with the most submissions will also get a prize.

NKCDC was one of the first Philadelphia organizations to host an annual community cleanup, starting in the mid-1990s. In a typical year, more than a dozen community and school groups gather to clean up blocks and parks across Kensington, Port Richmond, and Fishtown.

“This year will be a little different,” Hoffman said, “but we hope it will be just as fun.”

NKCDC primarily serves residents and businesses in the Riverwards, but this event is open to anyone in Philadelphia.
