Our Work- September 2019

What you did in 2018

2018 Annual Report

NKCDC works for and with Kensington, Port Richmond and Fishtown residents and businesses. In 2018, we were able to complete tremendous depth and variety of work because of your support.

6,511 people attended 55 of our events. One of those events was a Block Build that marked our first home repair partnership with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia. Because of that partnership and your efforts, NKCDC was able to provide repairs for 33 homes in Kensington.

In 2018, community members stepped up to become more involved on their blocks and in their neighborhoods. NKCDC trained 20 block leaders and 38 Community Connectors.

In 2018, business owners and entrepreneurs took the risk to invest more in their properties and their ideas. 50 River Wards businesses were referred to Storefront Improvement, SafeCam, ASEZ Business Expansion, and InStore programs. 31 applicants to the Reimagine Kensington Storefront Challenge resulted in 9 award winners.

NKCDC offers housing services for anyone living in Philadelphia. Because you and your neighbors referred friends and contacted us for housing assistance, 227 NKCDC clients purchased homes and 770 households received energy assistance in 2018.

Kensington and Fairhill collaborative wins U.S. Department of Justice crime reduction funding

A collaborative of Kensington and Fairhill service providers, including New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC), HACE, and IMPACT Services Corporation, has been awarded $1,000,000 total over three years through the Innovations in Community-Based Crime Reduction Program, part of  the Office of Justice Programs of the United States Department of Justice.

"In Philadelphia we know that complicated problems require collaborative solutions," said Felix Torres-Colon, Executive Director of NKCDC. "For years, HACE, IMPACT and NKCDC have worked to support our Kensington and Fairhill neighbors and help bring their vision for improving their communities to life. With everything neighbors are enduring today, the last thing we want to do is duplicate efforts. The Department of Justice understands the connection between crime, social cohesion and the physical environment, and we are honored to receive this grant, which will advance our community development work together."

The Kensington and Fairhill Collaborative proposed a holistic, three-year project to reduce violent crime by implementing strategies to enhance social cohesion and collective efficacy in areas of the neighborhood facing the biggest challenges. This project was made possible with the support of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Philadelphia, the City of Philadelphia's Criminal Justice Advisory Board, the Managing Director's Office, the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, the 24th and 25th Police Districts, Temple University, and Rutgers University. Read more.
